Alcolu Theatre - Alcolu, SC

Alcolu Company Store, Alcolu, SC

Alcolu Theatre
Alcolu, South Carolina

Alcolu Theatre Interior

Like many of the theatres in the mill villages of South Carolina, the Alcolu Theatre was a large auditorium built above the company store. The only entrance to the theatre is by way of steep metal stairs at the back of the store. Movies were shown but the space was also used for meetings, dances, and live shows. The small village of Alcolu is all but gone. The company store sits on a small section of road, now bypassed by newer highway construction on Route 521. It is between Manning and Sumter but not close enough to be included in the activities of either city.

Alcolu was established between 1885 and 1890 as a mill town for the Alderman Lumber Company.
